Rome: Total War
I've just started playing this game at the recommendation (and loan) of a work colleague. Wow, what a great game. It doesn't have the strategic complexity of the Civilization series, but it adds a real-time battlefield tactics experience that is fantastic. Not having the benefit of many years of tabletop or other forms of more realistic war gaming, managing unit fatigue and morale requires a learning curve.
Something else I've noticed - there doesn't appear to be any sort of resource out there to describe the different units, at least at their basic strengths. So, I've started my own as I play through the Roman campaign as the Scipii, one of three Roman factions you can begin with.
