I've just begun reading this (as of May 2004), and am very impressed with the breadth and detail that Gwyn Jones provides.  The reviewers at Amazon (see the link to the right) have provided some excellent reviews of the book.

If you're at all interested in this period of history, or on the impact that Vikings had on the development of some of the world's societies, this is a great (if long) read.
