June 18-19 2005 - Baronial Border War XXIII
2 Adults. 7 Children. A Honda Civic with a utility trailer. Camping on the top of a mountain, with the nearest porta-john a quarter mile away - downhill. Not camping on the ballfield, then finding out later it should have been ok.
My first melee battle(s) - 7 of them or so. Helping Ethan get settled into fighting boffer. His Grace Dag and Lady Anne Marie's visit to camp, and visiting them at the Hafla in turn. A non-hangover packup day (praise the gods!)
There are so many great memories from this event, but as a squire (this is "A Squire's Journey" after all), the biggest impression had to be my first experience in a melee.
Got to test out my new war board, modeled nearly exactly on Dag's old warboard - 24" x 42" of laminated, curved 1/2" plywood. Decided I definitely need to make a war sword - my tourney sword is too long, and got fouled too often. Melee work is up close and personal! Well, it was for me - just a shield wall grunt, but man-oh-man was it fun!
Favorite part? The first crash of shields, and that crouch-and-lift to just completely take the other shields out. Second-fave? Hmm, staying with my unit, executing our mission. It was surprisingly satisfying to be part of a team. Coming from a guy who's preferred individual sports for as long as I can remember, that means something. Dag called me a "melee monster". Not sure about that, but it was certainly fun. As I've noted elsewhere,
After the first 7 battles or so, I had to bow out so that I could help Einkil, my 8-year old, with his boffer fighting. He had a great time; I need to spend more time with him.
